  • Overview of Chatham

Located in Barnstable County, Chatham was established in 1664 by the English. Sitting at the tip of the elbow, Chatham is surrounded on three sides by water making it a profitable fishing area. Although the average population is less than 7,000 during the off-season, the town has become a popular tourist attraction. At the height of tourist season, the number of people in the area can swell to upward of 25,000.

Bordered by Nantucket Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, it is fitting that Chattam is historically known for being a fishing town. You have a view of the water from almost every area in the city making it a perfect place to live for those who love the vast oceans and the hint of saltwater that lingers in the air. For people who love to visit the area, places like the Cranberry Inn and the Chatham Seafarer are always open to provide the best in comfortable accommodations.

Chatham is made up of four small villages: Chatham, South Chatham, West Chatham, and North Chatham. The Monomoy Wildlife Refuge is nearby as well as one of the most popular working lighthouses in New England, the Chatham Light. The United States Coast Guard is responsible for its operation and also for making it available to visitors. The decommissioned Monomoy Point Light, located on Monomoy Island, is also a popular tourist attraction.

If you are into history, Chatham has much to offer in the way of historic sites and landmarks. In addition to the lighthouses and beaches, there are also many different parks and scenic areas that ate connected by walking paths and bike trails. During the peak months of tourist season, there are tours available that take visitors to many of the most popular tourist attractions in both Chatham and other nearby communities. It’s close proximity to Boston also allows visitors easy access to the big city.

The Atwood House built in 1752 and the Caleb Nickerson House built in 1772, are two of the oldest homes still standing in the area. There are many types of homes in the area ranging from single family cottages to luxury waterfront condos that offer views overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Luxury apartments are also available that make it easy for many of the area residents to work in Boston and make their home in the smaller, more relaxed environment that Chatham provides.

Because of its unique location, residents get to enjoy the benefits of both worlds. They can enjoy living in a small seaside community, while still being within close proximity of the shopping and financial districts of Boston. Known for its booming financial district and beautiful shops and boutiques, being downtown can be the highlight of a person’s day, especially if they love to shop or simply take in the beautiful architecture in the area.
