  • Overview of Harwich

Lying just to the west of the elbow portion of Cape Cod, Harwich rests along the southern edge of the arm. Harwich is in close proximity of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Nantucket Sound borders the area beaches. There are three operational harbors in Harwich Port, including Saquatucket, Allen Harbors, and Wychmere.

Several villages make up Harwich proper. They include West Harwich, East Harwich, Pleasant Lake, Harwich Port, North Harwich, South Harwich, and Harwich Center. The Wequassett Resort and Golf Club is also located in Harwich. When it was established in 1670, it was originally part of Yarmouth. It was eventually incorporated into a town in 1694.

The numerous bogs in the area were ideal for growing cranberries making this one of Harwich’s most profitable industries. Known as the birthplace of the cranberry industry, one of the first cranberry operations was established in 1846. Cranberries are still grown in the area, but now the main money-maker is tourism. The area also hosts the annual Cranberry Festival which originally began in 1976. Harwich is also a popular choice for families who move to the New England area. Its location makes it perfect for individuals who work in Boston and other areas of the mainland but still want the quiet, coastal life.

Harwich has many popular tourist attractions. It is the start and finish location for the “Sail Around the Cape” excursion each year. Along with the Cranberry Festival, the area has many different attractions that are popular with both tourists and local residents. The Wequassett Resort and Golf Club is one of the most well-known clubs in New England. The Cape Cod Lavender Farm is also located in Harwich. If you like the beach, Harwich has several of the most popular along the Cape Cod coast. There are also inland beaches along Sand Pond.

The Cape Cod Rail Trail and the First Congregational Church of Harwich are two of the most popular tourist attractions. The Harwich Antique Center and Patriot Shopping Center are main shopping areas shared by both Harwich and South Dennis. The Antique Center has over 40 shops inside with vendors offering everything from Victorian furniture to vintage collectibles. If sports are what you’re after, Harwich is the home of the Mariners who play in the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Although Harwich is known for its tourism, its a popular location for families who are looking for peaceful residential communities. Many Boston residents who work and live in the city own smaller cottages in the area that allow them to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city. Some Harwich residents who work in the city, live in the smaller towns of Harwich and its villages to have a peaceful balance between work and family. Luxury condos and apartments are extremely popular for the younger generation who want to live on the Cape and enjoy being close to the water.
