  • Overview of Dennis

Located in the Center of Cape Cod, it literally divides the piece of land into two parts. As part of Barnstable County, Dennis is one of the most popular areas for tourists. Settled in 1639, the town was originally a part of Yarmouth, but later was incorporated into its own entity and named after Rev. Josiah Dennis. The Shiverick Shipyard was the primary base for industry in the area. With little to no land available for agriculture, the shipyard was the major money-maker.

The Cape Cod Bay Coastline that borders the northern edge of Dennis is one of the most beautiful scenic areas in the state. Because of the beautiful beaches and stately Colonial homes, Dennis is a common tourist destination. Bette Davis was discovered at the local summer theatre, The Cape Playhouse, where she held a job as an usher. One of the oldest and most well-known summer theatres in the country, actors and actresses come from across the country to take part in the venue’s productions.

As a popular seaside resort, Dennis has many attractions. Some hold significant historical value, while others are simply great places to visit. Both Bayview and Mayflower Beaches offer fun in the sun for families who enjoy playing in or on the water. Scargo Tower is one of the highest observation points in the area and gives you a bird’s eye view of much of the surrounding area. The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History is also close by and is a great place to take the kids. The Cape Cod Rail Trail is also an excellent outdoor trail that allows you to explore much of the area’s wilderness.

When it comes to homes in the area, you can find everything from small, cozy cottages to stately, seaside mansions. Large, beautifully built Colonial homes are also available. Many of the homes can be rented as vacation homes or used as a primary residence. Luxury condos and apartments can be found both along the coastline as well as in the heart of downtown, offering residents a choice as to which view they prefer.

Because of where it’s located and the fact that it spans from Cape Cod Bay to the north and Nantucket Sound to the south, residents can enjoy both the water and the natural beauty of the land. Dennis, East Dennis, South Dennis, West Dennis, and Dennis Port make up the community. Each of the smaller communities has its own character and share of historical sites. Exploring the town of Dennis and all it has to offer can take up several days if you fully take the time to enjoy yourself.
