Barnstable

As one of the oldest towns in the area, Barnstable is also the largest in terms of total acreage and number of residents. Located on Cape Cod, the town is made up of seven smaller villages. It is a popular tourist destination and many of Boston’s elite have chosen it as their summer home. Presidents Grant and Cleveland spent their summers in Barnstable. The Kennedy Compound is located there as well.

As the section of the cape that connects Cape Cod to the mainland, Barnstable is part of a very rich and diverse heritage. Not only does it include several locations on the National Register of Historic Places, the area is also blooming with modern architecture and style. Old and new are blended into one unique community.

In its infancy, Barnstable was a thriving port, often with as many as 800 ships sitting in the harbor. Fishing and agriculture were thriving industries. Saltwork was another industry that was extremely important to the area. While the introduction of steamships and railroad lines caused business in the area to decline over the years, the area was still a popular choice for those who loved the Cape and wanted to live on the water.

Throughout the area, there are several things to do that will interest every member of the family. In Hyannis, you can sample one of the locally brewed beers at Cape Cod Brewery. If you like nature and being outside, you can visit the Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary. The United States Coast Guard Museum is also close by for those who love the history of the ships and naval life. The Cahoon Museum of American Art and the Sturgis Library are also popular attractions.

Bus lines travel from the Barnstable and the Cape to Boston on a regular basis throughout the day. People who live on the Cape and work in Boston proper can enjoy all of the perks of the big city while living in a quaint harbor town. Modern, upscale homes are available in small, cozy neighborhoods. Luxury condos and apartments that dot the beach offer excellent opportunities for up and coming professionals to have the best of both worlds in terms of job and family.

Cape Cod proper is known for its seafood and other famous dishes. Restaurants throughout the Barnstable area serve local favorites that are second to none. The Star City Grill is a popular nightclub that serves some of the best food in the area. If you want a few laughs with your meal, the Barnstable Comedy Club aims to please. They offer regular performances from popular comedians in the area and offer a full menu to go along with the entertainment.
